Little Tokyo
Registration is now open for the Southwest Oral History Association Conference, to be held March 31-April 3, 2011 in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles.

About Little Tokyo, Los Angeles: Meeting at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in the Little Tokyo area of Downtown, attendees will be close to Chinatown, El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument and City Hall among other historical sites. Los Angeles, as a center of commerce, history, culture and entertainment offers the perfect location for our fortieth anniversary conference. Founded by a multi-racial group of pobladores in 1781, the city is even more richly diverse today.

Panel Presentations: Presentations from throughout our Southwest region and beyond will focus on our theme of Visualizing Oral History…Final Cuts, Many Uses. Many of the sessions and workshops will be geared towards helping attendees learn how oral histories become final products and reach multiple audiences.

Computer Lab Workshops: Also in keeping with the theme we will offer workshops at the DISKovery Center (a computer lab) providing hands-on instruction in processing digital audio and digital video to process oral histories and create final products.

Workshops: Our popular Introductory Oral History Workshop will be offered at the Centenary United Methodist Church. Six additional workshops round out our offering: self-publishing hardbound books, from transcript to script to performance, the well-recorded interview (audio equipment and much more), the summary method as an alternative to transcript, and two project management workshops: from principles of project management to managing a community oral history project.

Friday Opening Program: Meet other conference attendees and watch the screening of the Oscar-nominated film, “Who Killed Vincent Chin?” plus two other short-short films about Japanese Americans in WWII. Filmmakers will be available for discussion.

Conference Hotel: The Miyako Hotel Los Angeles, 328 E. 1st Street, Los Angles, CA 90012 (213-617-2000) offers a terrific rate of $99 on executive rooms for out-of-town attendees. You may upgrade to an executive room at no additional charge.
